Idia College, Benin City destroyed Usugbenu Technical College, Irrua, 7-0, and Benin Technical College defeated Ogbona Secondary School 2-1 to win the female and male categories.

New talents have been discovered for the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, Bendel Insurance, and the Nigeria Women's Football League (NWFL) side, Edo Queens at the just concluded Edo Governor’s Cup.

Nothing less than nine talents have been earmarked to be drafted into Bendel Insurance and Edo Queens at the maiden Governor’s Cup.

In the female final, Idia College, Benin City destroyed Usugbenu Technical College, Irrua 7-0, and Benin Technical College defeated Ogbona Secondary School 2-1 to win the male competition.

Benson Osarumense of Idia College and Osagioduwa Lawrence of Benin Technical College, respectively, received the Golden Gloves and Golden Boots awards. Ogbonnaya Onuchukwu of Idia College and Adeniran Yusuf of Benin Technical College, respectively, received the Golden Boots.

Shaibu reveals reasons for the Governor's Cup

The Edo state Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, revealed that the mission for the Cup is to discover talents at a tender age.

Shaibu revealed this at the grand finale of the tournament at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

He said, “We’ve identified over nine players from the teams that played today (Friday), who are potential feeders for Bendel Insurance and Edo Queens.

“What We want to achieve is to catch them young at the grassroots level and one important thing is that the Education Week is showcasing not just the knowledge, but that beyond the knowledge, there is need for physical wellbeing. We are using their physical mentality to stabilise their academic pursuits.

“Last year, we were given marching orders to restart sporting activities in our schools. That is why every Wednesday across Edo State, at the same time, sporting activities are taking place and on Fridays, we have extracurricular activities.”

Bendel Insurance is NPFL Group A leaders, while Edo Queens have booked a slot in the NWFL Super Six.
