With both teams vying for UEFA Champions League qualification next season, the game was billed as a tough encounter between two teams on a similar level, but played out in a manner exactly opposite to that.

Despite being the surprise package of the 2022/23 season, Newcastle showed that they were no pushovers when they hosted Tottenham at Saint James’ Park, hammering Spurs with an early blitz that the Londoners were unable to recover from.

It took only two minutes for Tottenham to open the scoring, with winger James Murphy finishing at the near post to set the tempo for the rest of the match.

By the 10th minute, Tottenham were already out of the contest as Joelinton and Murphy again scored to give Newcastle a 3-0 lead while Spurs appeared to have already given up.

The Magpies were relentless in their approach in the first half and continued to press their advantage with two more goals before halftime as summer acquisition, Alexander Isak scored twice to put Newcastle 5-0 up by the 21st minute.

At the break, Tottenham took off goalkeeper Hugo Lloris due to an injury, incredibly, it was their second change of the game as they sought to plug the leaks at the back with an earlier change after only 23 minutes.

Spurs fared better in the second 45 minutes and opened the second half scoring through talisman Harry Kane who made it 5-1 after four minutes of the restart.

Kane’s goal was only a consolation as Newcastle banished any hopes of a fightback with a sixth goal from substitute Callum Wilson.

The Magpies ran out 6-1 winners, to further their top-four agenda with a healthy win that takes them into third, above Manchester United on goal difference even though the Red Devils have played a game less.
