Alexander Isak's goal against Paris Saint-Germain broke a longstanding jinx in the UEFA Champions League for Newcastle

Newcastle’s Alexander Isak broke a 20-year Magpies jinx after his goal against Paris Saint Germain in a 1-1 draw on Matchday five of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League season.

Isak was on hand to turn in a parried effort from teammate Miguel Almiron to give Newcastle the lead against PSG, creating a piece of history in the process.

The Swedish forward, who has been an excellent servant of the club, became the first Newcastle player to score an away goal in the Champions League since Magpies legend Alan Shearer did so in 2003.

With Newcastle’s long absence from the competition, no player from the club had managed to find the back of the net in an away fixture since Shearer scored at the San Siro against Inter in March 2003.

Isak scores first away UCL goal of the season

Prior to Isak’s goal against PSG, Newcastle had failed to score in away matches against Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan, when they lost 2-0 at the Signal Iduna Park and drew 0-0 at the San Siro respectively.

Although Isak’s goal was not enough to secure all three points against PSG, it was enough to write his name in the Newcastle history books, which is something the former Real Sociedad player can be pleased with.

The draw against PSG left Newcastle with a chance of reaching the round of 16 as long as they beat AC Milan at home, and results between PSG and Borussia Dortmund go their way.
