NPFL NFF president reacts to away wins, praise referee performances, fan reactions

After 24 goals recorded in the first game week, Wednesday will usher in the second round of the 2023 NPFL matches, with 10 encounters spread across 10 venues.

Ibrahim Gusau, Nigeria's Football Federation president has applauded the outcome of the first set of games for the 2023 NPFL season, adding that he expects that efforts should sustain through the season and thenceforth.

The first match week of the new season saw just two teams win their home matches, four teams pick wins away from home, and four other matches ending in draws.

Across the board, all 10 games witnessed a combined 24 goals with Kwara United vs Gombe United being the only game devoid of a goal.

Gusau praise NPFL teams, Nigerian referees

Reacting to the outcomes of the games, Gusua who became the NFF president in September, commended the performance of the referees, as well as advised that they maintained the same level of performance.

“I am happy with the results in which so many teams won on away ground," said the Nigerian football chief, "as well as the reports we received from most of the centres concerning the performance of the referees.

“I want to commend the NFF Referees Committee for putting their right foot forward from the beginning and also charge the referees themselves to sustain credible output going forward.

"We are determined to ensure that so many things about the League change for the better and we will not relent in our efforts."

The NFF president also emphasised the organization's dedication to revitalising domestic football in Nigeria and rebranding it to promote real growth and sustainability that will benefit all parties involved and other indirect income earners.

Top matches await on game week 2

Wednesday will see the 2023 NPFL season enter its second game week, with 10 matches spread across 10 venues.

After stunning Akwa United, Group A leaders Bendel Insurance will welcome 2017 champions Plateau United to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.

After faltering in the opening game of the season, Akwa United will look to bounce back in their second game when they pay Enyimba a visit in Aba

Group B leaders Abia Warriors will also return home - to the Umuahia Township Stadium - after their away victory at Rangers, to welcome Bayelsa United.

Other top midweek fixtures will see defending champions Rivers United head to Sunshine Stars, while record champions Enyimba will host Akwa United in an expectedly exciting game at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba.
