‘Finidi has the right to ask’ - Former NFF president backs new Super Eagles coach request for foreign assistant
Amaju Pinnick, the former president of the Nigeria Football Federation, has supported Finidi George, the recently appointed head coach of the Super Eagles, in finding international assistants for his backroom team.
Date for unveiling Finidi George
According to reports from Sporting Tribune, Finidi George will be formally introduced to the public on Monday morning in Abuja by the Nigeria Football Federation as the next substantive head coach of the senior men's national team, the Super Eagles.
Prominent figures scheduled for the unveiling include Senator John Owan Enoh, Minister of Sports Development; Mrs Tinuke Watti, Permanent Secretary in the ministry; Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, President of the NFF; and Dr Mohammed Sanusi, General Secretary of the NFF.
George turned down the chance to coach a second-tier team in Spain to return to Nigeria and lead Enyimba FC, two-time CAF Champions League winners.
He won the NPFL title with Enyimba in his second season and has put the club in a position to retain the title this season, with six games remaining.
The 52-year-old assisted Portuguese coach José Peseiro for 20 months starting in the summer of 2022.
During that time, the Super Eagles qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and, three months ago in Cote d'Ivoire, came within sight of winning a fourth African championship.
The new head coach will begin his first immediate task by getting maximum points against South Africa and Benin Republic in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
