The former Super Eagles' interim coach spoke extensively about the future of the national team
The Nigeria Football Federation's (NFF) Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen, has shed light on the plans regarding the search for a new manager for the Super Eagles and potential friendly games during the upcoming international break.
Eguavoen addressed the vacant position for the Super Eagles' coach, stating, "There’s a vacancy, so how do you fill it up? If people want to apply, why not? I don’t think it’s a bad thing." Eguavoen emphasized the need to fill the vacancy and expressed openness to interested candidates applying for the position.
Assessment of Former Coach Peseiro
The 1994 AFCON winner also expressed satisfaction with the performance of the immediate past Super Eagles coach, Peseiro. He stated, "Yes, I was [satisfied with Peseiro’s performance]. You can’t say you were not satisfied with the level of performance when you get to receive a medal at the AFCON."
Despite a slow start, he commended Peseiro for his achievements, particularly receiving a medal at the AFCON.
However, Eguavoen acknowledged that he was not privy to the details of any discussions for Peseiro to continue as the coach.
Hope for Continuity and Friendly Matches
While Eguavoen personally hoped for Peseiro's continuation, he highlighted the uncertainty due to potential undisclosed discussions.
Eguavoen stressed, "Somebody who has done well, whether Peseiro or somebody else, it doesn’t really matter. If you’ve done well, you should be given an opportunity." He also hinted at the possibility of arranging friendly matches for the Super Eagles in the upcoming March international window once a new coach is appointed, expressing confidence in the availability of players.
Eguavoen said, "Once we get a coach in place, this is not a problem. The window is there, the players are available."
After reaching the final of the 2023 AFCON, Nigeria’s incoming head coach will be well aware of the high standards expected of them while managing one of Africa’s biggest footballing nations.
