Football Kenya Federation president to face Senate inquiry on leadership ahead of the 2024 elections amid controversies.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa is set to face tough questions from the Senate as he appears before them on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.

The hearing, scheduled for 11 am at the Kenyatta International Convention Center's Impala Conference Room follows a petition filed concerning the alleged mismanagement of football and resources in Kenya.

The Parliament Office of the Clerk of the Senate issued a telegraphic address confirming Mwendwa's appearance.

“We refer to the meeting of the Standing Committee on Labour and Social Welfare held on October 5, 2023, on the petition concerning the mismanagement of football in the country by the Football Kenya Federation, at which you were present. During the meeting, the Committee resolved that the petitioners and the Football Kenya Federation engage in dialogue, to address the issues raised in the petition and report back to the Committee within 30 days,” read part of the letter.

The Senate's invitation extends to allowing Mwendwa to bring up to five individuals whom he deems necessary to assist in responding to the Committee's inquiries.

Mwendwa has been under scrutiny for financial misappropriation of FKF funds for an extended period.

His leadership faced turmoil in 2021 when the Federation was disbanded to pave the way for a caretaker committee.

However, earlier this year, Mwendwa was acquitted of 44 charges, which alleged that he misappropriated Sh38 million designated for football development in the country.

Complicating matters, Mwendwa is facing uncertainty about his potential bid for re-election in the upcoming February 2024 FKF elections.

Legal restrictions could bar him from contesting for a third consecutive term, having already served two straight terms of four years each.

Notable figures have already declared their interest in the upcoming FKF elections, including US-based ex-footballer Samuel Owino 'Kempes,' former FKF president Sam Nyamweya, and Gor Mahia Secretary Sam Ocholla.
