The Super Eagles stars were meant to debut the new national anthem, but were unable to competently sing the tune

Nigeria’s match against South Africa in 2026 World Cup qualifying ended in a disappointing 1-1 draw for the Super Eagles, who have now failed to win any of their opening three qualifying matches, but even worse for the team was the inability of the players to sing the new Nigerian anthem.

Super Eagles struggle with new national anthem

The match against South Africa was the first since Nigeria’s senate voted to revert to the old “Nigeria, we hail thee” national anthem, taking a step away from the more popular “Arise o compatriots” hymn and was meant to see the Super Eagles players showcase their country’s new anthem.

However, despite videos of the players practising the new national anthem, when it came time to sing the tune before the match against South Africa, few players were able to follow the tune, with most not even attempting to sing.

Super Eagles falter against South Africa

During the match itself, the Super Eagles disappointed once more as they were only able to secure a 1-1 draw against South Africa as they continue to struggle in their World Cup qualifying group.

Nigeria is currently 5th in Group C of the CAF World Cup qualifiers with three points from their opening three fixtures against Lesotho, Mozambique, and South Africa.

The Super Eagles will be hoping for their first victory in the qualifiers when they take on Benin Republic in their fourth group encounter.
