Nigeria Women Football League set for historic TV debut after 33 years: 19 channels to go LIVE

The Nigerian Women Football League, NWFL, will make its TV debut for the first time since its inception this season.

In what is a landmark moment for women’s football in Nigeria, the Nigeria Women Football League, NWFL, has confirmed its long-awaited debut on television after 33 years. 

This historic development, Pulse Sports can report, comes after a statement from the Football League on its social media account. 

NWFL Goes Live on TV

For the first time since its inception in 1990, the NWFL is set for increased visibility and recognition for women’s football in the country. 

No fewer than 19 channels, including official broadcast partners, Afrosport TV, have been lined up to show live the 2023 season opener slated for later this moment.

In a statement on its X.com page, the NWFL described the TV deal as a historic moment.

“In a groundbreaking development for women's football enthusiasts, the eagerly awaited NWFL  2023–24 premiership season opener clash between Ekiti Queens FC  and Delta Queens FC  is set to make history as the first-ever NWFL Season Opening match to be broadcast live since the league's inception in 1990” the NWFL stated.

The statement added that while the opener will be live on AfrosportsTV, the official partner, the live coverage will be extended through a network of distribution partners, with 18 other channels including NTA, set to beam the game live to fans across the country. 

What the NWFL Deal Means for Women's Football

The decision to broadcast NWFL matches on 19 channels underscores the growing recognition and growth of women’s football in the country.
