NNL final matchday postponed indefinitely as teams eye Super 8 qualification

The final matchday for the 2023 season had originally been scheduled for Saturday, May 27.

The Nigeria National League (NNL) has confirmed that its final round of matches for the 2023 season has been postponed indefinitely until a new date is communicated.

The final matchday for the 2023 season had originally been scheduled for Saturday, May 27, however, teams as well as their fans will now have to wait a while longer for the season to be completed.

NNL's statement on postponement

The postponement, according to the NNL, is to enable the disciplinary committee of the Nigeria Football Federation sought out all the cases having been brought before it

"This is to inform you that due to cases at the Disciplinary Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation awaiting hearing, as well as the use of some of the stadia for the swearing-in/handing over ceremonies at the various states, week 6 Northern Conference and all week 10 Northern and Southern conference league matches are hereby placed on hold," the NNL circular said.

"Consequently, a new date shall be communicated soonest. All Nigeria National League clubs are by this circular requested to be on standby for the next directive n this subject, please.

"Kindly be informed that the last league matches shall be played simultaneously at the various designated centres," the release added.

Group winners to proceed to Super 8 playoff

Meanwhile, Heartland and FC One Rocket have both their places in the NNL Super 8 playoff with victories on Sunday, joining already qualified Katsina United in the promotion playoff.

Other NNL group leaders including Kano Pillars, Sporting Lagos and Mighty Jets have also maintained their positions at the top although facing intense pressure with one game left.

The Super 8 playoff will decide which four of the eight teams NNL group winners will gain promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
