Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland finished behind Novak Djokovic in the AIPS rankings of Best Male Athlete of 2023.

World's No.1 Tennis player Novak Djokovic has been crowned the AIPS Best Male Athlete of the Year 2023, topping football stars Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland.

Djokovic topped the list from a poll by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), where a panel of 405 journalists from 107 countries voted for the Champions of 2023.

The Serbian tennis legend described his 2023 season as “One of the best, I wouldn’t say the best, but one of the best,” reflecting on how 2023 stacks up against some of his greatest career seasons.

Djokovic clinched a record-extending eighth year-end No.1 finish in men’s singles World Tennis Ranking. Also, he only played 12 tournaments this year, including the ATP Finals, but won six of them, including three Grand Slams, making the season one of the most unforgettable years in his career.

For the top spot, the multiple Grand Slam winner amassed 616 votes, ahead of second-placed Swedish Pole Vaulter Armand Duplantis with 335 votes and Argentinian football icon Messi with 277 votes.

Despite Haaland making history with Manchester City by winning four club trophies and ending the 2022/2023 season as the highest goal scorer in the world, the Norwegian was fourth with 229 points ahead of Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen with 212 points.

Tennis youngster Carlos Alcaraz (184 votes), Swimmer Kos Hubert (129 votes), Steeplechase athlete Soufiane El Bakkali (119 votes), Basketball player Nikola Jokic (115 votes), and Kylian Mbappe (96 votes) complete the top 10 list.
