The NPFL opening day saw legends clash, Super Eagles icons led by Finidi George feature and underdogs shine in a thrilling start to the new season.

The NPFL kicked off its new season with a series of dramatic encounters, living up to the pre-season hype of an "electrifying start" involving former Super Eagles stars led by Finidi George.

In Owerri, Super Eagles legend Emmanuel Amuneke's managerial debut for Heartland FC began promisingly but ended in disappointment.

Despite taking an early lead, Amuneke's side succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against former champions Enyimba International.

The People's Elephant, led by 32-year-old coach Yemi Olanrewaju, staged a remarkable comeback with new signing Jeptha Clinton netting a brace.

Meanwhile, former Super Eagles coach Finidi's tactical acumen was on display as Bendel Insurance hosted his Rivers United in Benin City.

The encounter, however, ended in a goalless draw in despite the NPFL’s Pride of Rivers playing with 10 men for a significant portion of the match.

Remo Stars provided one of the day's biggest surprises, securing a stunning 2-0 away victory against Abia Warriors.

This impressive result came despite the absence of their manager, Daniel Ogunmodede, who is currently on duty with the Super Eagles for AFCON 2025 qualifiers.

The day also saw the newly promoted Ikorodu City FC receive a harsh welcome to the top flight.
