The Nigerian duo joined stars like Guillermo Ochoa, Jerome Boateng and Antonio Candreva in helping Salernitana get relegated from Serie A
Salernitana's fate in Serie A was sealed after a disappointing 3-0 loss to Frosinone at the Stadio Benito Stirpe, marking their descent to Serie B for the upcoming season.
The Granata's dismal performance throughout the 2023-24 Serie A campaign has left them anchored to the bottom of the table with a mere 15 points from 34 matches.
Salernitana relegated from Serie A
With only four league games remaining, Salernitana's dire situation was exacerbated by their inability to surpass Frosinone, who temporarily lifted themselves out of the relegation zone and into 17th place with 31 points. This mathematical impossibility effectively sealed Salernitana's relegation, making them the first Serie A casualty of the season.
Among the players bearing the brunt of Salernitana's relegation woes are Nigerian forwards Simmy Nwankwo and Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi. Despite their efforts, including two wins in 34 league matches, the duo couldn't steer the club clear of the relegation zone.
Tumultuous Season for Salernitana
Salernitana's journey this season has been marred by instability, evident in the revolving door of coaches in Paulo Sousa, Pippo Inzaghi, Fabio Liverani, and the current manager, Stefano Colantuono. The club's struggles extended beyond the league, with only two league wins against Lazio and Verona. Additionally, their Coppa Italia campaign ended abruptly with a crushing defeat to Juventus in the Round of 16.
Salernitana's relegation underscores the intense battle for survival in Serie A this season. With the fate of several teams hanging in the balance, including Genoa, Lecce, Cagliari, Hellas Verona, Empoli, Frosinone, Udinese, and Sassuolo, the fight to avoid the drop remains fiercely contested.
