The Sugar Millers showed true grit and determination as they fought back to beat City Stars.

Nzoia Sugar FC on Saturday revived their title ambitions after seeing off 10-man Nairobi City Stars 3-2 in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL match at Kasarani Annex.

Victory saw Salim Babu’s charges who many thought were out of the title race move back into contention alongside record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia and defending champions Tusker.

The Sugar Millers were up against a City Stars side that had defeated AFC Leopards 2-1 on Monday, May 29. Head coach Salim Babu made two changes to the team which took on Kariobangi  Sharks with Moses Mwale, Joseph Mwangi, and  Yasin Sue replacing Leonard Kasembeli, Mohamed Barisa, Timothy Wanyanga in the starting line-up.

City Stars started the game with so much confidence and they were rewarded in the second minute when James Mazembe connected to Timothy Muganda's delivery for the opener.

They should have extended their lead in the fifth minute but Kelvin Etemesi failed to connect with the ball inside the box, much to the relief of Nzoia's technical team.

Nzoia came close to finding an equalizer in the 13 minute but Steve Njunge pulled off a stunning save to deny James Mwangi.

Mwangi was looking for his 14th goal of the season and possibly looking to score as many goals but the Golden Boot looks out of reach for him with Benson Omala having 25 goals.

At this stage, it was Nzoia all over with City Stars soaking up the pressure but they had Njunge to thank after he put his body on the line, thwarting Boniface Kweyu's thumping shot midway through the first half.

The Sugar Millers managed to level matters in the 35th minute as Hasan Beja hit the ball into the back of the net from Vincent Mahiga’s free-kick to make it 1-1.

The final 10 minutes belonged to City Stars as Edwin Buliba went close to giving his side the lead with a bicycle-kick from inside the penalty box.

Nzoia did not sit back and defend after the restart with James Mwangi forcing Njunge into a save at the near-post.

In the 57th minute Nzoia  took the lead following a quick move down the left flank which saw Moses Mwale deliver a top-notch cross which was netted by Yasin Sue.

A minute later, City Stars were reduced to ten men when midfielder Vincent Otieno was given marching orders for a second bookable offense.

Nzoia Sugar goalkeeper Katasi was called into action for the first time after the restart by Fortune Makaringe following some great work by James Mazembe.

The former Kariobangi Sharks man won back possession in the Sugar Millers’ box, before quickly setting up Andrew Kisilu, whose low shot was superbly saved by the shot-stopper.

However, Nzoia found their third goal in the 75th minute when Hassan Beja slotted in a rebound after goalkeeper Steve Njunge spilled a shot from James Mwangi.

City Stars were awarded a penalty in the 87th minute after defender Mwale Moses brought down Antony Kimani inside the area which was converted by Ronward Makati.

Nzoia Sugar walked away 3-2 winners in a win that kept pressure on table leaders Tusker and second placed Gor Mahia in the title race.
