Ochan, voted man of the match in the 1-0 victory garnered praise for his distribution and reflex saves against the Purple Sharks, with goalkeeping coach Moses Oloya running onto the pitch to offer extra appreciation for his performance.
As the three best goalkeepers in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League, you would think things would be tense between goalkeepers Benjamin Ochan, Derrick Ochan and Ali Mwirusi at KCCA FC.
The trio have to give more than is required to prove to head coach Morley Byekwaso that they deserve to be considered for the No. 1 jersey at the MTN Omondi Stadium.
As they all stake their claim as the best in the business, such competition more often than not breeds unhealthy rivalry, but the trio have a great, positive and healthy relationship together.
Goalkeeper Derrick Ochan specifically insists that he is relishing the competition with both Benjamin (Ochan) – who is also team captain – and Mwirusi, and that it is positive support for whoever is picked to start between the sticks for the Kasasiro Boys.
The goalkeeper position is cruel because only one of us can play,” Ochan exclusively told Pulse Sports, adding; “But for us it is different, because we are all positive towards each other.”
“It is all support, support, support between me and my brothers. We push each other to get better, to improve everyday to be able to help the team when called upon.”
“The general message is that we must support ourselves, as everyone tries to lift the other even when one of us has a bad day. We try to keep it positive and healthy,” he continued.
Benjamin (Ochan) has been the consistent choice for KCCA this season, playing 11 of the 16 games played by KCCA this season, with Derrick (Ochan) and Mwirusi each playing twice.
The former Vipers SC and Police FC goalkeeper was given the nod for Friday’s trip to the Kabaka Kyabaggu stadium, for only his third appearance for the club this season.
Ochan, voted man of the match in the 1-0 victory garnered praise for his distribution and reflex saves against the Purple Sharks, with goalkeeping coach Moses Oloya running onto the pitch to offer extra appreciation for his performance.
The 23-year-old has affirmed that he will continue to fight to retain the gloves in the meantime as Benjamin (Ochan) recovers from injury.
“I do not want to stop, I want to keep this run going,” Ochan affirmed. “I don't know what the manager is going to do, so it is my responsibility to force him to carry on picking me.”
“As a goalkeeper, you have to be ready to play, I'm ready every week, and I've got to try and stay in the team and help them.”
"We have got to continue the competitiveness on the training ground. There is a lot to carry on going and we will see where it takes us this season," he stated.
Ochan will seek a third consecutive start and clean sheet for the Kasasiro Boys when they travel to Mbale Municipal Stadium to take on Kataka FC on Sunday afternoon.
