Express failed to win any of their seven matches in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League before the mid-season break for the Africa Nations Championship.
James Odoch hopes that Express FC’s win in the Stanbic Uganda Cup Round of 64 will be a turning point in their season.
Express put their struggles in the league to one side as Joseph Akandwanaho’s goal and an own goal from Joseph Kizito gave them a 2-1 victory in Kajjansi.
But the Red Eagles were made to put in the hard yard for the victory against a side that are famous giant killers in the competition.
“We did not play as well as I would have predicted, but we did not expect an easy game,” Odoch said
“They are a good team, and they have quite a reputation. But that is the nature of this competition.”
“I commend the boys for giving their all against the significant handicaps that we faced especially the ground which worked against us,” he added.
Express failed to win any of their seven matches in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League before the mid-season break for the Africa Nations Championship.
The break has brought to light several challenges in the background that threaten the immediate future of the club.
But Odoch insists that they took crucial lessons from the game
“Such games give you a lot to think about,” he said, adding “We take good lessons from playing against such an opponent, but overall I am glad we progress to the next round.”
“We did not play specifically well, but that is expected after a period without games.”
“However, we now know where we are at, and how much work we ought to put in to get to a desired level to compete in the league,” Odoch noted.
Express, currently ninth on the league standings, resume their league campaign on Saturday with a home tie against UPDF at the Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.
