‘Olunga has more international trophies than Salah’ - Harambee Stars captain earns high praise from fans

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has been lauded for leading from the front as Kenya secured the Four Nations trophy with some claiming he is now better than Salah and Osimhen.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has earned high praise from Kenyan fans after his hat-trick against Zimbabwe earned the national team the Four Nations trophy on Tuesday.

Olunga put in a man of the match performance as Kenya came from behind to beat the Warriors 3-1, equalising on the stroke of halftime, after Joseph Okumu had scored an own goal three minutes into the game, before turning the game on its head in the second half.

With the hat-trick, Olunga made it five goals in two games for Engin Firat’s men after his brace against Malawi on Saturday and it also won Kenya some piece of silverware in the form of the Four Nations trophy.

Following the win, some Harambee Stars fans saw the fun side of it and feel he has now surpassed some of the world’s top forwards such as Egyptian king Mohamed Salah and Nigerian Victor Osimhen, at least in national team colours.

“Michael Olunga has captained Harambee Stars to more international trophies than Mohamed Salah. Facts,” claimed an excited Harambee Stars fan on social media.

“Captain with a hat-trick today [Tuesday]. More goals in 2024 than Osimhen. Don't talk to me if your captain doesn't have a degree in Engineering,” commented another Kenyan supporter.

“Michael Olunga is better than Victor Osimhen, y'all not ready for this discussion,” said another thrilled fan.

Others feel Olunga is too good to be playing in Qatar and should be brushing shoulders with the world’s best in the Premier League.

“Now I am convinced Harambee Stars striker Michael Olunga can impress in the English Premier League. He can actually produce brighter sparks more than Nicolas Jackson at Chelsea. Just imagining Mikhailo Mudryk and Cole Palmer on the flanks, then Olunga at the centre,” was the observation of another fan.

“Michael Olunga is that type of striker that Arsenal and Chelsea need.”

“I wish Michael Olunga would have joined an English Premier League side,” said another fan who yearns to see the Kenyan international in England.

Olunga was also lauded for scoring a ‘perfect’ hat-trick after his first goal came via a header before netting on his right and left foots.

“Michael Olunga has scored the perfect hat-rick. Right foot, left foot and header. He becomes the first Harambee Stars player to ever do so,” said a keen observer.

There are fans who also want to see the national football team rewarded for their endavours just like the athletes who return with medals from international competitions.

“President William Ruto and his government need to appreciate Harambee Stars and players like Michael Olunga the way we see the government celebrating and rewarding athletes when they win medals for Kenya. Harambee Stars players are Kenyans too. They deserve recognition,” he said.

Even though it was an invitation tournament, Harambee Stars’ success and the reaction from fans shows how Kenyans yearn for positive performances from the national team and pressure is now on Firat and his charges to maintain the momentum.

Kenya have their work cut out in June when they will face Burundi and African champions Ivory Coast in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
