Michael Olunga urges Harambee Stars to stay focused on upcoming South Sudan match, emphasizing the present over past successes.

Harambee Stars captain, Michael Olunga, has issued a rallying cry to his teammates and fans, insisting that the team is squarely focused on the present, rather than past glories, as they prepare to face South Sudan in a pulsating friendly at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.

Olunga, fresh from leading Kenya to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Qatar last week, emphasized that the squad must maintain a level head.

"Our win against Qatar was a testament to our growth and potential, but it's crucial we remain grounded," Olunga stated, addressing a press gathering ahead of the match. “There's always a temptation to bask in past glories, but our eyes are firmly set on the future.”

Harambee Stars have been in commendable form lately, registering impressive performances against teams like Uganda, Rwanda, Iran, Mauritius, and Pakistan.

However, in Olunga’s words, every game presents a new challenge, and the team’s evolution is a continuous process.

"We’ve made significant progress, and credit goes to the coach for blending youth with experience seamlessly," he mentioned, highlighting the diverse talents within the team.

This upcoming match offers a unique challenge, given the regional rivalry and the historically dominant performances of Kenya against South Sudan. But Olunga is wary of complacency. “Playing a neighboring country is always a different ballgame. They have their strengths, particularly in physicality. It’s going to be a tough encounter,” the captain remarked.

While Kenya's past with South Sudan might be favorable – having clinched all four encounters – Olunga was quick to point out that history doesn't play the game.

"Every game is a new opportunity and challenge. Yes, our track record is positive, but we must approach this with the same rigor and commitment as any other match.”

Local pundits and fans alike are excited, especially given the team's recent run. Yet, it is this very excitement that Olunga wants to channel into performance rather than overconfidence.

"It's wonderful to have the country behind us. The energy and support make a world of difference. But it's upon us, the players, to ensure we translate that into results."

As preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, this friendly serves as a critical assessment of where the team stands.

Kenya's campaign will kick off with away matches against Gabon and Seychelles, promising fixtures that will surely test the team’s mettle.

But for now, all eyes are on the South Sudan clash. With a mix of veterans and budding talents, the Harambee Stars look set to provide a captivating performance.

The stage is set, and as the sun begins its descent on Tuesday afternoon, the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani will be abuzz with anticipation.

And while memories of past victories might echo in the stands, Olunga and his team will be firmly focused on the task at hand.
