Korea will be tasked to steer the team out of the relegation zone in Mathare’s remaining eight matches.

Mathare United have confirmed the appointment of Collins Omondi “Korea” as the new head coach, taking over from interim coach Samuel Koko, who maintains his goalkeeping trainer duties, the club has announced.

Former Harambee Stars coach Stanley Okumbi has also been appointed as the technical advisor respectively until the end of the 2022/23 season. This will be the second stint for the two with the club, having worked together during the 2014 and 2015 seasons with Okumbi as head coach and Omondi his assistant.

The duo will be tasked to steer the team out of the relegation zone in Mathare’s remaining eight matches. The club currently sits in 16th place with 22 points, four points adrift of safety albeit with a game in hand over their rivals.

This will be Omondi’s second head coaching job in the Premier League after his tenure with Nzoia Sugar in the 2019/20 season. He has also coached Nairobi Stima in the National Super League and was an assistant at Kariobangi Sharks and Posta Rangers.

Omondi presided over his first training session last Friday and has been preparing the team for his first match in charge against Gor Mahia this coming Wednesday at the MISC Kasarani.

In Okumbi’s case, it is not the first time he will be tasked with helping the club get out of a dire situation. He managed to lead the team to survival during a trying 2013 season, keeping the club’s status as a top flight club.

Acting head coach Samuel Koko resumes his role as goalkeeper trainer and going forward will also work as an assistant to Omondi. Koko took charge with the team bottom of the standings with only one win and proceeded to lead the lads to six wins in the 14 matches he presided over.

Beldine Odemba remains the Team Manager.
