Southampton sinks deeper into the relegation zone as they lost 3-1 to Newcastle at St James Park.

Newcastle came into this fixture from a back-to-back win against Tottenham and Everton and continued their newly found form against Southampton as they seek Champions League football. Two Nigerian stars Paul Onuachu and Joe Aribo both missed the trip as their team lost.

The away side took the lead late in the first half with a Stuart Armstrong strike while Callum Wilson levelled the score in the early minute of the second half. They added two more at the closing stage of the second half with an own goal by Theo Walcott and another from Calum Wilson.

As it happened

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe fielded a strong lineup as he made five changes to his side that defeated Everton at Goodison Park.

Southampton Manager on the other hand made four changes to his side that lost to Bournemouth as midfielder Joe Aribo and striker Paul Onuachu did not make the squad.

The away side started the game with much intensity as they created chances for themselves. Their counter-attacking threat paid off in the 41st minute when Stuart Armstrong met a perfect cross from Kamaldeen Sulemana deep inside the box and controlled it with a nice first touch before striking the ball into the net.

The second half started with Newcastle getting their first shot on target which led to the equaliser.  In the 55th minute, Callum Wilson received a short pass from Alexander Isak in the box; he then moved past his man and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

Newcastle added the second goal in the 79th minute when Theo Walcott put the ball into his own net. Newcastle were not finished yet as they crowned the game with another goal from Callum Wilson who dribbled his way past several defenders and found himself one-on-one with the keeper. His dummy throws the keeper off balance and he simply puts the ball into the back of the net.

This win makes it the third win in a row for Newcastle as they maintain their third position in the chase for Champions League football.
