Ex-Cranes captain and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango registered yet another start this season as his side beat Ismael Watenga’s Marumo Gallants 3-1 in the Nedbank Cup.

Forward Peter Shalulile’s hattrick sealed the deal for Rulani Mokwena’s charges as they advanced to the quarter-finals at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Thursday evening.

The Namibian striker also became the first Sundowns player to score 12 goals in the competition, moving one ahead of former skipper Hlompho Kekana.

Boitumelo Pheko put the home side on the score sheet with a thunderbolt strike from outside the box in the 33rd minute.

The goal meant that Dennis Onyango had only managed one clean sheet in five appearances across all competitions.

The Sundowns vice-captain has struggled to nail a starting berth this season; in the five starts, Onyango has made two appearances in the Nedbank cup, two in the DSTV Premiership and once during the CAF Champions League second-round first leg 7-0 mauling against La Passe FC.

Masandawana continues to dominate on all fronts they’re involved in. They hold a 19-point lead in the DSTV Premiership after 21 games and top their CAF Champions League group B standings on 7 points, one ahead of Sudan’s Al Hilal.

The Pretoria-based side also has a superior goal difference in the league and a solid backline; they have scored the most (32) and conceded the least (7), while Ronwen Williams has the most clean sheets in the league (14).

Peter Shalulile is also the league’s joint top scorer on nine goals. Sundowns next face Stellenbosch FC away on Sunday in the DSTV Premiership.
