Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has praised the senior players on his team for their roles in helping the younger players develop better.

Mokwena was appearing on the club's podcast, dubbed the Pitchside Podcast, hosted by club legends Teko Modise, Hlompho Kekana and Tiyani Mabunda.

"The culture of the team is that the senior players have a role to play not just in managing the change room but also the education process of youngsters," Rulani noted.

"Players like Onyango, Zwane and Mwene have done well in teaching the younger ones the team's culture, this is what we need, but you can only do it with those senior players around," he added.

The 36-year-old further explained that he could only do much, but most times, players guiding each other creates magic, giving the Onyango and Ronwen Williams transition example at the club.

"For example, Denis can tell Ronwen (Williams) that look, I have been number one before, and I replaced Mwene, but he supported and challenged me, which I am going to do for you."

"So, I am going to give you incredible competition so that you are better because Kennedy challenged me too," Rulani added.

Mamelodi Sundowns won the league last season, their sixth on the bounce with seven games to spare; Ronwen Williams managed 18 clean sheets, a new club and league record.

Mokwena was named head coach of the club in October 2022 permanently after the club hierarchy squashed the arrangement of three head coaches simultaneously.

The Brazilians also reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League. Still, they were eliminated by defending champions Wydad Casablanca who are set to face Al Ahly in the second leg.

The Egyptian giants chasing a record 11th interclub crown, won the first leg 2-1 in Cairo with former Sundowns forward Percy Tau running the show.
