Former Uganda Cranes captain Dennis Onyango and his Mamelodi Sundowns team suffered a shock cup exit in the Nedbank Cup after a 2-1 loss to Stellenbosch FC on Saturday evening at the Athlone stadium.
Iqraam Rayners scored twice in the second half for the hosts, while the Brazilians scored through an own goal by Stellenbosch goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt.
Sundowns took the lead with six minutes to the break when Aubry Modiba’s shot kissed the crossbar and bounced back into play, hitting the legs of a diving Lee Langeveldt before it went into the net, ending the half with leading 1-0.
The hosts started the second half brightly, with Iqraam Rayners pouncing on a poor back pass from Teboho Mokoena before he beat an incoming Onyango to level the score in the 48th minute.
Just when it looked like Sundowns were getting back into the game, Reyners struck again, connecting well with Junior Leandro Mendieta on the left to beat Onyango at the far post in the 57th minute.
The Stellies were able to see out the win, eliminate Sundowns from the cup competition, and reach the semi-finals for the first time ever.
The loss meant Masandawana’s 26-game unbeaten run had ended, and it was also Sundowns’ fourth loss this season across all competitions.
Rhulani Mokwena’s charges, who have already wrapped up the league, will now concentrate on the CAF Champions League, where they face Moroccan side CR Belouzidad in the quarter-finals.
