The United States women’s national football team defeated Zambia 3-0, affirming their status as one of the tournament's frontrunners.

Held at Stade Matmut-Atlantique in Bordeaux, the match showcased the US team's offensive firepower and defensive resilience.

The US opened the scoring in the 17th minute with Trinity Rodman’s precise right-footed shot from the center of the box, assisted by Lindsey Horan. T

his early goal set the stage for what would be a dominant performance. Just seven minutes later, Mallory Swanson doubled the lead with a clinical finish from the center of the box, again benefiting from Horan’s creative play.

Swanson wasn't done yet. In the 25th minute, she scored her second goal of the match, converting a well-placed through ball from Sophia Smith. This strike effectively sealed the game, leaving Zambia with little hope of a comeback.

The match was not without its interruptions, with injuries to Zambia’s Racheal Kundananji and Lushomo Mweemba causing brief delays.

Despite Zambia’s efforts, including several attempts from Barbra Banda and a few notable defensive plays, they were unable to breach the US defence. The American backline, led by Naomi Girma and Casey Krueger, remained resolute throughout.

The second half saw continued pressure from the US, with blocked shots and near-misses highlighting their attacking prowess. Substitutions, including the introduction of Lynn Williams for the injured Sophia Smith and fresh legs in midfield, maintained the US's high tempo and control.

Mallory Swanson’s standout performance earned her the Player of the Match accolade, with her two goals proving crucial.

The US’s efficient finishing and solid defensive work set a high standard for their Olympic campaign, while Zambia will need to regroup and reassess as they move forward in the tournament.
