Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic challenges his teammates to use the EFL Cup final defeat pain as fuel for future success.

In a heart-wrenching Carabao Cup Final at Wembley, Chelsea faced a bitter defeat to an under-strength Liverpool side, sparking a wave of criticism and mockery.

Despite the loss, Chelsea's goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic and manager Mauricio Pochettino are rallying the team, urging them to channel their disappointment into motivation for future successes.

The match highlighted a clash of generations, with Chelsea's "new generation" under the spotlight, facing a youthful Liverpool team that defied odds and injuries to claim victory.

A Bitter Pill to Swallow

"The feeling is very painful," admitted Petrovic, reflecting on the defeat, per Standard. The match was not just a loss but a missed opportunity for many in the squad experiencing their first major final.

“It was a first final for a lot of us, also here at Wembley. The atmosphere was amazing and we really felt the supporters with us. We must use this feeling, because this is a new generation and we want to keep the success of this club.”

“We are not happy and it hurts. We left everything on the pitch. The team put in a lot of effort and we had a lot of opportunities — we hit the post and had chances to kill the game, but we couldn’t do it.

“Then we concede the very late goal, and that one detail changes everything, as we don’t have time to stop them from lifting the trophy. Now we have to get our heads up and think about Wednesday.”

Petrovic emphasized the importance of using the experience as fuel for growth, acknowledging the high stakes and the heavy blow of the defeat.

Despite dominating portions of the game and coming agonizingly close to scoring, Chelsea couldn't convert their chances, a narrative all too familiar for the Blues in recent times.

The match was a rollercoaster, with Chelsea hitting the post and creating numerous opportunities to secure the win. However, a late goal by Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk in the 118th minute dashed Chelsea's hopes, marking yet another disappointment for the club in domestic cup finals.

This loss was particularly stinging, considering the vast investment in the team by co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali. With over £1billion spent on new signings, the pressure was on to deliver trophies, making the defeat a tough pill to swallow for everyone associated with Chelsea.
