FKFPL Why Gor Mahia is nicknamed 'Sirkal'

Gor Mahia are set to face Kenya Police in a clash dubbed the 'Sirkal Derby' this weekend, but this is an account on how the 1987 CAF Cup Winners' Cup champions earned that nickname.

The match got off to a slow start, with neither side coming out of the blocks with any pace or real intensity. Through the first half hour, Posta enjoyed more possession, and midfielder Jackson Macharia was an influential figure.

However, Nzoia had their promising moments, especially when Joseph Wafula and David Simiyu combined down the left flank, though the visitors' goalkeeper John Njau was left relatively untested.

With the lack of creativity and penetration, it was no surprise to see the half end 0-0.

The second stanza saw Posta make the first change just before the hour mark in an attempt to liven up their attack, with Caleb Olilo rising off the bench to replace Brian Marita.

The game then opened up with both teams throwing bodies forward in search of the killer blow, which Dinken Mwema would find the winner with eight minutes of regulation time remaining.

Kakamega Homeboyz 0-0 Muhoroni Youth

Muhoroni Youth withered numerous attacks from Kakamega Homeboyz at the Bukhungu Stadium, as the two sides played out to a goalless stalemate.

Both teams showed their intent from the onset with Homeboyz defender Brian Chala and Muhoroni forward Kevin Okoth firing a shot on target in the opening three minutes of the match.

The best chance of the first half fell at Nicholas Kipkirui’s feet on the cusp of half-time, but Larry Potter made a good save to deny the burly forward from finding the back of the net from range.

Homeboyz forced James Ssetuba into action 10 minutes after the interval with Samuel Odebowale sending his effort straight at the Ugandan shot-stopper.

Muhoroni turned the screw in the closing stages of the match and they looked the more likely to find a winner.

Kevin Amwayi hit the woodwork in the 83rd minute before Potter saved from a shot five minutes later, but in the end, neither team could find the goal they desired and ultimately the match ended in a 0-0 draw.

Tusker 0-1 Bidco United

Still reeling from a recent defeat by league leaders Gor Mahia, Tusker FC suffered another setback in their title chase, falling 1-0 to Bidco United in an early afternoon kickoff at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.

The match marked by Tusker's missed opportunities, especially in the second half saw Douglas Mokaya's first-half strike seal a historic win for Bidco United - their first victory over Tusker.

Mokaya's goal came from a cross-turned-shot from the right sneaking into the bottom right corner amidst confusion in the Tusker defense.

The miscommunication between the backline and goalkeeper Brian Bwire proved costly for the Brewers. Despite several chances to equalize in the latter half, Tusker could not capitalize, ultimately paying the price for their inefficiency in front of the goal.

The result leaves Tusker FC with a daunting task to catch up in the title race as they are now trailing by 12 points behind Gor Mahia.
