Fulham were left disappointed during their 1-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night after the referee Stuart Atwell awarded a penalty to the Reds.

Issa Diop was found to have fouled Darwin Nunez in the penalty box in the 38th minute of the match, giving Liverpool a penalty. Despite the fact that replays indicated the centre-back didn't make contact with Nunez, VAR failed to find that Stuart Atwell had committed a glaring mistake.

Mo Salah took the penalty kick and converted it, but Fulham captain Tom Cairney claimed that during the second half, Atwell told one of his teammates that he had made a mistake.

Stuart Atwell made the wrong call says Tom Cairney

According to Fulham captain Tom Cairney, the referee Stuart Atwell told a Fulham player that his error cost his team the game.

Speaking after the game, Cairney said, “I thought we played very well at times, but to lose to a penalty that wasn’t a penalty is always a kick in the you-know-what.

“At the time, I wasn’t sure [if it was a penalty]. The ref made a decision, I thought he’d seen contact. I asked him on the pitch, please just make sure they [VAR] check it.’

“He said they checked it, but he said in the second half to one of our players that it wasn’t a penalty, so it’s frustrating because it goes to other people to make the correct decision.

“Issa Diop hasn’t touched him, Nunez has taken another step and then gone over, and then you lose to something like that at Anfield which is frustrating when we’re trying to climb as high as we can.”

Cairney surprise to see Fulham ahead of Chelsea in the league table

As a result of the loss, Fulham are now tenth on the Premier League table, with Brentford in ninth position but with five points ahead.

The club captain is pleased with his teammates and said it is unbelievable to see that they are ahead of Chelsea on the league table.

Still speaking, Cairney said, “If we said we’d be above Chelsea after 34 games at the start of the season, people wouldn’t have believed us. We’re in the top half, and we deserve to be."

As it stands they are six points ahead of Chelsea who are in 12th position. Fulham appears focused on finishing ahead of Chelsea with four games remaining.
