The President, speaking on Tuesday at State House during the flagging off of the Kenya U20 national football team for the U20 African Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt, called on Kenya's football governing body to up the ante.

“You have the heavy responsibility to lift football in our country to the level of athletics," said the Head of State as quoted by Nation Sports.

"We want to see Kenya’s Harambee Stars rise to international status. The fact that many Kenyans have played in top leagues in the world demonstrates that talent exists in our country," he added.

Both the Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums have undergone significant renovations, with the latter standing ready, having already hosted test matches.

The Kasarani Stadium is in the final stages of renovations and is expected to host test matches in June.

The two historic venues are expected to host 2024 CHAN matches before playing a complementary role to the under-construction 60,000-seater Talanta Stadium in 2027 for AFCON, also to be jointly hosted with Uganda and Tanzania.

On the footballing side, the federation has made significant steps with the appointment of South African football legend Benni McCarthy.

The former Manchester United first-team coach's appointment has sparked renewed optimism within Kenyan football.

McCarthy has already overseen a couple of 2026 World Cup Qualifiers matches for the Harambee Stars during the March international break.

The Harambee Stars coach oversaw a thrilling 3-3 comeback against Gambia before losing to Gabon on home soil at the Nyayo Stadium.

McCarthy’s immediate focus is the remainder of the qualifier games before shifting gears to CHAN in August.
