South Sudan Basketball team made history on Friday by beating Senegal 83-75 to earn a ticket to the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup Finals to be held in Japan, Philippines, and Indonesia in late August to mid-September.

The match was played in Alexandria, Egypt, the same host for the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations football finals.

The historic fete is motivating the country’s U-20 boys football team to press harder against the Uganda Hippos when the two meet on Sunday in the final Group B match at the AFCON games.

South Sudan carries three points from their 1-0 win over Central African Republic and needs nothing other than a win over Uganda to book the direct slots.

Their midfielder Daniel John says the AFCON debutants want to emulate their basketball heroes to beat Uganda and progress.

“We are motivated by the fact that our national basketball team qualified for the Basketball World Cup,” a pumped-up Daniel told the media.

“That has really boosted our morale and we’re very happy for them. We also want to make our families and country happy by qualifying for the next round.

Uganda and Congo lead the group with four points, South Sudan one while Central Africa has none yet.

“We all know the importance of the match tomorrow (Sunday) because it is a do-or-die for us and we need a win,” he added.
