Liverpool lost again to the defending European champions in their second-leg round-of-16 clash, failing to atone for their first-leg disaster class.
Real Madrid recorded a 1-0 win against Liverpool at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night, March 15 in the Champions League.
The defending European champions made sure to finish the job against the Merseyside Reds having hammered the 2019 winners 5-2 in the first leg at Anfield.
The first leg was largely uneventful as it was entertaining with both sides seeing chances on either end of the pitch.
Darwin Nunez was first to test the Madrid defence after seeing his shot saved by Thibaut Courtois in the opening 7 minutes of the game.
Five minutes later, Toni Kroos saw his shot saved by Alisson on the other end.
Real Madrid kept creating chances and Vinicius could have opened the scoring in the 14th minute had it not been for the brilliance of Alisson.
The hosts kept pushing and Eduardo Camavinga was next to try his luck, unleashing a goal-bound 30-yard pile driver that was saved by Alisson once more across the post.
The Reds also saw crucial chances chances missed by Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez in the first period.
However, the first half ended with neither side able to break the deadlock.
Second Half
The second period was less entertaining than the first in what was largely a cagey second 45 minutes.
Fede Valverde saw his shot saved in the 57th minute by Alisson, before Karim Benzema missed a sitter for the hosts in the 69th minute.
However, the deadlock was finally broken after a great effort by Vinicius who found Benzema in the box with the Frenchman tucking home for the opener and surely putting the result beyond doubt and giving Liverpool no room to hope for a comeback.
Benzema’s strike proved to be the difference between the teams on the night as Carlo Ancelotti’s men held on for a 1-0 win against Jurgen Klopp’s men who were knocked out of the tournament 6-2 on aggregate.
