Reece James replaced Caesar Azpilicueta as the new leader at Stamford Bridge following a decision by Chelsea and their new manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Chelsea’s new captain Reece James could be set for another spell on the sidelines after picking up a fresh injury.
James was subbed off in Chelsea’s first game of the season against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The right-back was named the club new captain ahead of the 2023/2024 season following the departure of Caesar Azpilicueta.
How to make money this weekend?
“He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season,” manager Mauricio Pochettino stated after the club confirmed the decision to make him captain.
“He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas.”
Injury fear vs Liverpool
James indeed led the Blues by example as he put in a brilliant showing against Liverpool in the season opener at the weekend.
The 24-year-old was unable to finish the game as he was taken off, with concerns that he had picked up another injury.
However, his manager Pochettino stated after the game that his skipper was not injured but tired.
“He was tired,” Pochettino stated during his post-match press conference at the Bridge.
However, just days after, it seems Reece James is back on the injury table with reports that he is set for a scan on Thursday.
James has struggled with injuries in recent times with the talented England international missing 25 matches across competitions last season.
