Anthony Muki Kimani finally hung his boots after 17 years of football that took him from Nairobi City Stars, Sofapaka, Bandari, and back where it started and he feels it ended just as he had hoped for.
Kimani, a midfielder par excellence, honed his skills at Dagoretti Santos and Kenyatta National Hospital FC before getting his first taste of top-flight action for World Hope (now City Stars) in 2008.

The official is hopeful that the club can turn into a competitive side despite their struggles in the 2022–23 season.
He, however lasted just one season with the Kawangware-based side before he made a switch to the then newly-promoted Sofapaka in 2009 as the club claimed the Kenyan Premier League title in their maiden top-flight campaign.
His spell with Sofapaka was short-lived as he soon returned home to World Hope in the second leg of the 2009 season. A second stint with Batoto Ba Mungu soon followed in 2010 and went on to play for them for four years, winning the Super Cup twice (2010 and 2011) and the 2013 FKF President’s Cup.

The midfield maestro then switched to Mombasa-based Bandari FC in 2015 and played for them for three years before taking a brief break from the game, having won the 2015 President’s Cup and 2016 Kenyan Super Cup with the Dockers.
During his stint with Bandari, Kimani says he always felt the urge to return home and lift his team back after seeing them sink into the abyss with the worst happening in 2016 when they were relegated.
“In 2016, while at Bandari, I scored goals against City Stars that largely contributed to their relegation,” Muki, as he is commonly called, told the club’s website.
“Being my first Premier League club, I always felt obliged to return to City Stars and guide them back to where they belonged, and that is what informed my return in 2019.

“I will forever look back and say it was mission accomplished, as the team returned to the top league in 2020,” added Kimani, who contributed three goals and 10 assists in 24 games as City Stars earned promotion back to the top flight in 2020.
The 2010 Premier League Midfielder of the Season made a total of 109 appearances for City Stars and 284 in the Premier League and retires a club legend having captained the side until his exit.

City Stars have, however, not had a good season in the just-concluded campaign, finishing 15th and escaping relegation in May but their retiring skipper believes next season will be completely different.
“We may have struggled in the just-ended season due to a transition plan, but a new set of lads who came in have shown that they have what it takes to make the club rise once again,” he added.

Muki had already started planning for life after football as he recently completed a CAF ‘D’ coaching license Diploma and it would not be a surprise to see him on the City Stars technical bench in the coming seasons.
