FOOTBALL Robert Matano in ‘serious’ demand by FKF Premier League club

A top-tier club is said to be very much interested in poaching Matano away from Ruaraka

Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) side Bandari are interested in appointing Robert Matano as head coach.

Currently, the Mbaraki-based outfit is under veteran tactician Twahir Muhiddin, who is serving on a temporary basis.

The former Harambee Stars head coach has been steering the Dockers since they parted ways with Anthony Modo Kimani. Kimani left when Bandari were eliminated from the FKF Cup by AFC Leopards.

Credible reports indicate Matano is being seriously considered for a permanent role.

Matano is one of the most successful local coaches, having won the Premier League three times. He is currently at Tusker, a club he led to the league title twice on separate stints.

The Brewers are also in a prime position to defend the title this season but are engaged in a tight race with Gor Mahia and, to some extent, Nzoia Sugar.

Should he choose to leave Tusker and head to Bandari, his main priority will be helping the Dockers win their first major title since promotion to the top flight in 2011.

Matano’s experience goes beyond doubt, as he has handled Ulinzi Stars, Bidco United, and AFC Leopards, with whom he won the FKF Cup in 2017.

But the allure of a possible CAF Champions League participation could make him stick with the Ruaraka-based club instead.

Tusker are fighting on two fronts, they are in the final of the FKF Cup, are set to play Kakamega Homeboyz, and are in the title fight too.

Both channels lead to continental football qualification; should they retain the title, they will represent Kenya in the Champions League, and a cup win will give them a Confederation Cup ticket.
