FBL Round-Up: NEC rise, Contenders struggle on the road as a grand relegation dogfight brew

Of the four teams in contention for the three promotional slots, NEC has won thrice away while Mbarara City, Police and Kitara have just one win on the road.

National Enterprise Corporation climbed to the top of the table thanks to a late Marvin Kavuma’s goal that earned them three points against Ndejje University in Bugolobi.

The match that was played under a heavy downpour and soggy pitch saw the students finish with ten men after Kipper Luwalo received marching orders following a double-booking in the second half.

Struggling on the road

The top teams just can’t win away games. Mbarara City surrendered their lead at the top of the table after failing to break Lugazi’s resilience in a goalless draw on Thursday.

In Jinja, Kitara enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but could not register their first league win under coach Sam Ssimbwa despite scoring first against Jinja North.

George Ssenkaaba put them in the lead after 32 minutes but they could only hold it for ten minutes before Dickson Matama levelled.

Police, who were just a point behind the leaders heading into the match day registered a similar result as they were held to a goalless draw by Kataka in Mbale.

“You know, every team makes use of their home ground so if we pick a point away, that is better,” Angelo Lonyesi, the Police FC coach told the media after their barren draw in Mbale.

“The officiating was somehow [wanting] but as I have emphasised, [in this league] every team must make use of their home ground. We had to fight the team as well as the officiating bit of it.”

Relegation dogfight

At the bottom things are thick! Only two points are separating the 8th-placed Lugazi City from the relegation zone. Basically, half of the teams in the league are involved in the relegation dogfight.
