Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim has to explain why struggling striker Rasmus Hojlund did not start against Arsenal on Sunday.

Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim has clarified why striker Rasmus Hojlund was not included in the matchday squad for their match against Arsenal.

Hojlund, who has struggled in front of goal this season, had come under criticism for his lack of goals and his absence from the team was seen as a statement from the coach as Joshua Zirkzee was preferred up front.

However, Amorim said it was down to a need for some fresh legs in the team after playing the Danish striker for many games.

“No, it’s freshness. I think he was really fatigued at the end of the game. And we tried different things,” said Amorim.

“We know that the opposition, the two centre-backs, what they want, what they like. And we tried to do different things to surprise the opponent.”

Hojlund played 90 minutes on Thursday when United drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad in the Europa League but still could not find the target with Zirkzee scoring before the Spanish side equalised from the spot.

The striker was, however, introduced late on against the Gunners, getting a run out in the final 15 minutes of the contest at Old Trafford.
