A Kenyan security guard who fell while on duty at the same stadium where journalist Grant Wahl died on Saturday has also been declared dead
John Njue Kibue, a Kenyan security guard, has died in hospital after falling while on duty at Qatar's Lusail stadium early Saturday morning under unknown circumstances.
The 24-year-old migrant worker has become the latest in a string of workers to die mysteriously while working in Qatar, and his family were notified about his death after he gave up the ghost in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Hamad General Hospital in Doha.
The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, who are the organisers of the World Cup announced Kibue’s death in a statement which read: “We regret to announce that, despite the efforts of his medical team, he sadly passed away in hospital on Tuesday 13 December, after being in the intensive care unit for three days.
His next of kin have been informed. We send our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues and friends during this difficult time.”
"We want to know what happened."
The circumstances surrounding Kibue's fall are unknown, but his family is desperate for the truth, even though they are unable to privately fund an investigation.
His sister, Ann Wanjiru, told CNN, "We don’t have the money to get justice for him, but we want to know what happened.
“We want justice. We want to know what caused his death. They have never sent us a picture to show where he fell from or given us any other information,”
Qatar's Supreme Committee also said in their released statement: "On Saturday 10 December, John Njau Kibue, a security guard at Lusail Stadium, suffered a serious fall while on duty.
Stadium medical teams immediately attended the scene and provided emergency treatment before he was transferred to Hamad Medical Hospital’s intensive care unit via ambulance," while promising to investigate the circumstances leading to his fall urgently.
According to CNN, Kibue's medical certificate states that he had a “severe head injury, facial fractures, and pelvic fractures.” presumably caused by the fall.
As fans continue to enjoy the spectacle of the 2022 World Cup, it has become harder to ignore the unique circumstances under which the tournament is being hosted amid worries about worker safety and an uneasy conversation about the same.
