Owen Baba Kasule is having the form of his life with New York Red Bulls II in the MLS Next Pro League.

Kasule, who joined the big apple side in March 2023 after a transfer saga that involved parent club Wakiso Giants, Turkish second-division side Ankara Keciorengucu and his current club, has been in top form since his arrival.

The 19-year-old says several factors are behind his form, but mainly the trust of compatriot and head coach Ibrahim Ssekagya.

“I have to appreciate the head coach Ibrahim Sekagya, his trust in me has spurred me on to give everything, and I needed it,” Kasule told Pulse Sports from his base in New York.

“The good performance is down to hard work, the urge to learn more and compete every day, but also the support from my teammates and the coaches have also pushed me more.”

Kasule and Sekagya are not the only Ugandans on the team; forward Frank Ssebuufu, also signed from Wakiso Giants, is also leading the line upfront and has been scoring more often.

July remains Kasule’s best month so far at NYRB II, scoring five in five, along with an assist in as many games.

New York Red Bulls II are competing in the Eastern Conference of the MLS Next Pro League and sit fourth with 11 wins from 23 games.

Ibrahim Sekagya is one of the most revered names in Ugandan football. Now retired and into coaching, the former Uganda Cranes captain featured for top sides like New York Red Bulls and RB Salzburg.

The former centre-back also turned out for the now defunct State House FC and KCCA FC locally before moving to Argentina, where his professional career was launched, going on to feature for sides like Atletico de Rafaela, Feero Carill Oeste and Arsenal de Sarandi.

Sekagya was at first interim manager at NYRB II but was later confirmed permanently as head coach in February 2023.
