Former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has set a new UEFA Champions League record, beating former rival and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique to the milestone in the process.

Ramos sets new UCL record after Lens goal

Ramos recently made a return to his boyhood club after an 18-year journey that saw him turn out for Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain.

Despite Ramos’ return, Sevilla endured a shocking Champions League exit, finishing bottom of their group, but the veteran defender still managed to leave his mark on the competition.

Ramos scored a penalty during Sevilla’s 2-1 loss to Lens in their last match of the group stage, and although it was not enough to stop Los Nervionenses from losing, the goal still made Ramos the most prolific defender in Champions League history.

Sergio Ramos’ UCL goals

The goal against Lens was Ramos’ 17th strike in the Champions League, elevating him above both Pique and former Real Madrid star full-back Roberto Carlos, who are both tied for 16 goals.

Ramos has scored three goals for Sevilla in the Champions League across his two spells at the club and also scored 14 times for Real Madrid, although he was unable to find the back of the net in the competition during his two-year stint at PSG.

The Spanish centre-back is regarded as one of the greatest defenders to have played in the Champions League, having won the competition four times, all with Real Madrid.
