England's hopes of winning the 2024 Euros are slim to none thanks to an incredible 23-year Spanish record

Sunday's 2024 UEFA European Championship final pits Spain against England in what promises to be a thrilling contest.

La Roja has been the standout team of the tournament, winning all six matches so far and emerging as favourites for the title.

23-year unbeaten Spanish streak threatens England

Despite England’s resurgence in the Euros, which has now seen them reach the final of the competition for the second time in row, history suggests that they have reached their final bus stop in the competition.

Spanish teams, both at the national and club levels, have been virtually unbeatable in major finals. This includes World Cups, European Championships, Champions League, and the UEFA Cup/Europa League.

Remarkably, of the last 26 men's finals featuring Spanish teams, all have ended with Spanish victories. While there have been instances where Spanish teams lost, those defeats were at the hands of other La Liga sides.

The last time a non-Spanish team triumphed over a Spanish one in a major final was back in 2001. Liverpool edged out Alaves 5-4 in the UEFA Cup final with a golden goal in extra time, and Valencia fell to Bayern Munich in the Champions League final on penalties.

England hoping to break Spanish record

This impeccable record makes England’s job on Sunday even harder, as they prepare to take on Spain and their 26/26 winning streak in major finals since 2001.

Spanish teams have demonstrated the strong mentality required to prevail on the biggest stages and England will need to overcome not just a formidable opponent but also a two-decade-long history of Spanish dominance if they are to win the Euros for the first time ever.
