The youngster playing could violate German labour laws putting Spain at risk of punishment

Spain have been one of the stand-out teams of Euro 2024 and at the core of their team has been 16-year-old Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, who has been impressing fans and pundits alike.

However, his participation in the final group game against Albania could land Spain in hot water due to German labour laws guarding against exploitation of teenagers.

German law protecting teenage workers

According to German regulations, individuals under 18 are not permitted to work past 20:00. This rule applies to both German nationals and foreigners, with the aim of protecting young workers in the workplace.

While there are exceptions for athletes allowing them to play until 23:00, this time frame includes all post-game activities such as showering and media duties.

Yamal’s participation in matches that kick off at 21:00, particularly if they extend into extra time, could push the boundaries of these regulations.

Should Spain field Yamal in such a scenario, they risk facing a potential fine of up to €30,000 if the German authorities decide to enforce the law strictly. This concern arose following his 71-minute appearance against Italy, and it could become a pressing issue if Spain progresses to the knockout stages with late kick-offs.

Spain depending on Yamal at Euro 2024

La Roja will be depending on the Barcelona youngster regardless of the possibility of running foul of the law and given the teenager’s performances for the national team, Spain will surely feel like Yamal is worth the risk.

Since making his debut for Spain in 2023, Yamal has been directly involved in seven goals (two goals, five assists) in only nine matches and is now a core part of the national team.

Alongside Nico Williams, Yamal has helped Spain add crucial pace to their attack and made La Roja a bigger threat paying in behind defences and creating chances for centre-forward Alvaro Morata.
