France midfielder tells Lamine Yamal what he has to do to impress in the European Championships semi-final.

French midfielder Adrien Rabiot has laid down the gauntlet to Spain’s mercurial youngster Lamine Yamal ahead of the UEFA Euro 2024 semi-final clash between Les Bleues and La Roja.

Yamal, 16, has been one of the standouts in the tournament so far, as he leads the rest of the pack in assists and big chances created. Rabiot, on the other hand, is a main feature in Didier Deschamps's French set-up, and although he missed the quarter-final against Portugal due to suspension, he is expected to slot right back into the team.

Spain vs France

Spain are the consensus best team in the tournament so far, and according to the bookies, they are favourites to advance, at the expense of the two-time world champions.

Luis De La Fuente’s side are the top-scoring team remaining in the tournament with 11 goals, and only their opponents, France, have conceded fewer than their two goals (one).

La Roja owe their potency in attack to their two dynamic wingers: the young Nico Williams on the left and the even younger Lamine Yamal marshalling the right flank. To tip the odds in their favour, France will have to keep both players in check, and Juventus midfielder Rabiot believes Yamal, in particular, will have to do more than he has already done to be impactful against them.

What Rabiot said

Speaking in the pre-match press conference, Rabiot acknowledged the teenager's mental fortitude but boasted that France are capable of cooking up more pressure than he has experienced so far.

“We’ve seen that he’s a player who can handle the pressure," Rabiot said, per GFFN. He has a lot of quality. However, it’s always difficult to handle a semi-final in a tournament like this.

"It’s down to us to put the pressure on him, to not let him be comfortable and to show him that in order to play the final of a Euro, he’ll need to show much more than he has until now.“

Meanwhile, Yamal is running out of time to set the record for the youngest player to score in the European Championships. He is already the youngest to debut in the competition and even reach this stage, but he has to score at least once in the two biggest games of his career so far to set another record.
