During his recent official travels, Ogwang recounts meeting the owner of Fenerbahce and persuading them to consider establishing an academy in Uganda.

The Baganda proverb says that traveling is about seeing and returning is about sharing the tales of the journey.

At the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Uganda is represented by 20 athletes and Sports Minister Peter Ogwang among the officials.

Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü, a Turkish professional football club based in Istanbul, occasionally competes in top-tier European club competitions such as the Europa League and Uefa Europa Conference League.

Speaking on NBS Sport on August 21, Ogwang stated that the owner of Fenerbahce initially planned to set up the academy in Tanzania, but he urged them to choose Uganda instead.

“I met the owner of Fenerbahce FC who intended to establish an academy in Tanzania,” he shared. “I appealed to him to bring it to Uganda.”

Despite Ogwang’s patriotic message, some users on the X social media platform (formerly Twitter) remain skeptical.

They recalled Ogwang’s previous promises, including the completion of the Mandela National Stadium redevelopment by July, which he failed to fulfill. “This minister and his fantasies! Let’s wait and see,” commented Gerald Lule.

Nkawasize Ibra questioned why Ogwang pleaded and begged, suggesting that he should have engaged the owner to understand their choice of Tanzania over Uganda.

Muhanga Martin likened Ogwang to FDC's Nandala Mafabi while Mutaka expressed a lack of trust in his words.
