Onyango was dropped to second-choice goalkeeper in the 2022/23 season as the club looks at its future.
Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango is reportedly seeking contract renewal with the South African champions as his contract expires this month.
The former Uganda Cranes captain was dropped as second-choice goalkeeper in the 2022/23 season in favour of Ronwen Williams, also South Africa national team captain.
Williams won the golden glove with 18 clean sheets in 26 appearances, a league record.
Onyango revealed to the South African online publication, iDiski Times, that he is hoping for a contract extension at the club or a new role in the technical department.
“Yes, of course, my contract is coming to an end, but we are in talks with the club to try and retain me,” Onyango told iDiski Times.
“The club looking at it and saying, ‘Denis, if you have the opportunity to go and become whatever you want, whether a goalkeeper coach or administrator, you’re welcome to do that,” he added.
Onyango further confirmed his desire to stay longer at the club, where he has achieved legendary status. He noted that he has the goodwill of the club.
“You know, when one door closes, the other opens. Of course, the club is there, the opportunity is there, and the club is really trying to help in whatever activity you want to do,” Onyango added.
Onyango is the most decorated footballer in South African football history, having won ten league titles.
