This was the second time Rhulani Mokwena’s side had put five past the club of the century, with the first being in 2019, then with Pitso Mosimane as head coach.

Mamelodi Sundowns again put up a ruthless display in the CAF Champions League group stage as they swept aside the club of the century in Al Ahly 5-2 on Saturday at the Loftus Versfeld stadium.

Masandawana started like a house on fire, with Chilean forward Marcelo Allende opening the scoring after just four minutes.

Mohammed Sherif replied to level matters nine minutes later; however, Themba Zwane doubled the lead in 24 minutes.

Teboho Mokwena’s thunderbolt in the 40th minute then made it 3-1 to send the hosts into the break with a two-goal cushion.

Al Ahly seemed to mount a comeback when old boy Percy Tau scored in the 61st minute to make it 3-2.

The visitors’ hopes were dashed when Namibian forward Peter Shalulile scored a late brace to all but confirm victory for Sundowns.

Shalulile scored his first and Sundowns’ fourth in the 72nd minute before sealing it in the 88th minute.

This was the second time Rulani Mokwena’s side had put five past the club of the century, with the first being in 2019, then with Pitso Mosimane as head coach.

Sundowns condemned the Red Devils to their worst defeat in the competition with a 5-0 humiliation in the quarter-final first leg, eliminating them 5-1 on aggregate.

The win takes Sundowns to 10 points as they also seal a slot in the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.

Al Ahly, who now sit third on four points in group A, must win against Coton Sport in Cameroon and Al Hilal at home and hope that Sundowns beats Al Hilal (in Sudan).

Al Hilal sit second on nine points, for them to stand a chance of progressing out of the group.
