If Peseiro does not get to the semifinals of the 2024 AFCON he will be dismissed as Super Eagles coach.

Jose Santos Peseiro has agreed to continue serving as the head coach of the Senior Men National Team of Nigeria known as the Super Eagles, per an agreement he signed with the Nigeria Football Federation.

The Portuguese have been given the responsibility to guide the Super Eagles to, at the very least, the semifinals of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations finals, which will take place in Cote d'Ivoire in a few months, as specified in the original contract, drawn in May 2022.

With one match remaining, Peseiro guided the Super Eagles through the qualifying rounds and into the tournament, including a 10-0 record victory over Sao Tome and Principe at Agadir, Morocco, in June 2022.

The new arrangement also places him in command of the Super Eagles B, the home-based athletes who compete in the twice-yearly African Nations Championship.

Jose Peseiro and NFF contract issues explained

Jose Peseiro was previously given a three-day deadline by the Nigeria Football Federation to agree to a pay decrease and extend his contract.

Peseiro, a former coach for Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, was said to be paid $70,000 when he took over the Super Eagles in May 2022.

According to sources, if Peseiro did not agree to their request, the NFF would select a caretaker coach to oversee the Super Eagles' match against Sao Tome and Principe in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying round.

The 63-year-old has now voiced his intention to take the Super Eagles to the AFCON finals in Cote d'Ivoire in 2023 by renewing his contract.

Peseiro, after renewing his contract, released the list of 23 players for the Super Eagles game against Sao Tome and Principe.

The Portuguese manager will be in charge at the Nest of Champions in Uyo against Sao Tome and Principe and the Super Eagles need just one point to ensure they finish top of the group.
