It was a moment of joy and jubilation for the people of Chengdu, China as Nigeria Super Falcons’ star, Asisat Oshoala scored against Australia in the FIFA Women’s World Cup second group game.
Nigeria defeated co-hosts Australia in a five-goal thriller on Thursday.
The Super Falcons produced an excellent display to complete a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Matildas on Thursday at Suncorp Stadium, Australia.
Uchenna Kalu, Osinachi Ohale and Asisat Oshoala were on the scoresheet for the Super Falcons.
In what was a feisty encounter, Nigeria had to weather the barrage of attacks by the Austrailian side who were missing Chelsea star Sam Kerr.
Despite missing the Chelsea striker and two other key players, the Matildas enjoyed plenty of possession and kept Nigeria on the back foot for large spells.
Asisat Oshoala Relationship with China
Oshoala joined Chinese club Dalian in 2017. During her debut season, she scored 12 goals helping Dalian Quanjian win the league championship.
She was awarded the league's golden boot award after she scored the most goals in the Chinese league.
Her exploits in China attracted the attention of European giants Barcelona. She traded Asia for Europe and joined Barcelona Femini in 2019 after helping the club win the league championship for the second consecutive year.
Excitement Galore in China
After Oshoala’s heroic contributions, including a goal and an assist, the people of Chengdu showered praise on her.
Pulse Sports' in-house journalist Hassan Abdulsalam who is in Chengdu, China, to cover the World University Games, spoke to some Chinese residents.
One Juanhia complimented the striker for her amazing efforts during the game. He said, “Oshoala is a good scorer and I like the way she played football.”
Another Oshoala admirer named Shun added, “She can score; I like her.”
The Super Falcons of Nigeria will face Ireland in the final group game on Monday, July 31st.
