Maroons goalkeeper Simon Tamale, KCCA’s Rogers Mato and Basham Mugwa from Busoga United are the three players that stood out in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League in May, according to UPL.

The three have been nominated for the final Pilsner player-of-the-month award from the 2022/23 season.

Simon Tamale

From a month when there was little spark bar from the outlier results that erupted unexpectedly in some few games, Maroons’ Tamale seems to be the most outstanding.

The Prison Warder could easily be ranked among the best three players who stood out effectively throughout the league in the just-concluded season.

Tamale featured in four of the Maroons’ five games in May and kept clean sheets in all as he capped it with three player-of-the-match awards.

The only time Maroons conceded was against Express in a match his understudy Amir Nalugooda played.

Tamale in May

May 3rd: Maroons 1-0 SC Villa (Clean sheet and man-of-the-match award)

May 9th: Gaddafi 0-0 Maroons (Clean sheet and man-of-the-match award)

May 16th: Maroons 1-0 Onduparaka (Clean sheet and man-of-the-match award)

May 19th: Express 2-0 Maroons (Did not play)

May 27th: Maroons 0-0 BUL (Clean sheet)

Basham, Mato

Rogers Mato’s haul against Bright Stars on the final day stands out as one of the two best individual performances of the season, but he will live to regret his empty-net miss against Busoga United that could’ve all but sealed the title for KCCA.

Basham scored five goals and one assist the entire season but his hattrick away to Arua Hill in the only outstanding performance he had in his 22 appearances will go into the records as one that saved Busoga United’s season.
