Tammy Abraham reveals heart-warming story of Chelsea's new boss Frank Lampard

Roma forward Tammy Abraham has spoken of the heart-warming moment new Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard amazed him with his faith in him.

Abraham grateful to Lampard for Chelsea gesture

Abraham grew up in Chelsea’s academy at a time when Lampard was writing his legend in the Chelsea senior team, and the striker eventually got to play under the club icon when Lampard coached the Blues in the 2019/20 season.

Abraham had just returned from a loan at Aston Villa at the end of Mauricio Sarri’s reign and the beginning of Lampard’s tenure when he was entrusted with an important part of the team, even when he was not expecting it.

Chelsea were facing a transfer ban at the time, which facilitated Lampard’s choice to make Abraham a first-team regular, but it was still a huge gesture of faith that the England international is still grateful for.

Abraham was delighted after unexpected Chelsea lifeline from Lampard

Speaking after Lampard was appointed Chelsea interim boss, Abraham recalled the special moment saying, “I never knew I was going to stay. I was speaking to Villa at the time, and they told me, ‘After this loan, we’re going to come and buy you in the summer’.

"In my head, I was thinking this is the year I move on and go back to Villa. But I remember in pre-season, Frank came up to me and asked if I wanted the No.9 shirt. I was like, ‘Wow, that’s a shock!’

Abraham remembers that he had expected to go back out on loan, but was happy to see that he would get his chance to shine at Chelsea.

He said, “I thought I was going out on loan, then that question popped up, so I had the belief that it might be my year to stay at Chelsea.”

Abraham ended up being Chelsea’s top goalscorer in the season, scoring 15 goals in the Premier League and 18 in all competitions for the Blues.
