Although he was unable to get on the scoresheet, Tella still had a commendable game as Leverkusen pipped Inter to climb to second place on the Champions League group stage table.
After Tella hit the woodwork and was substituted in the 83rd minute, Bayer Leverkusen eventually found the winner through defender Nordi Mukiele, who struck in second half stoppage time to snatch all three points for the German champions.
How it happened
Leverkusen dominated possession, as expected during the match, but Inter's resolute defence restricted the Bundesliga champions to only two shots on target in the opening 45 minutes.
The home side’s best chance to open the scoring in the first half fell to Tella after only three minutes on the clock, but early jitters got to the Nigerian forward, who sent his shot crashing off the crossbar.
In the late stages of the second half, just as the Italian champions seemed set to claim a valuable away point, Leverkusen delivered a familiar late blow.
Defender Nordi Mukiele emerged as the hero, firing in from close range after a fortunate bounce in the box sealed the win.
