With star forwards Victor Boniface and Patrik Schick sidelined due to injury, the spotlight may fall on Nathan Tella, who is fresh off a match-winning performance against Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal.
Tella’s heroics knock Bayern out of DFB Pokal
Coming on as a substitute in the 61st minute, the Nigerian needed just eight minutes to break the deadlock with a composed finish.
His strike not only knocked out the defending Bundesliga champions but also secured Leverkusen’s spot in the quarterfinals, keeping their hopes of retaining the trophy alive.
Now, with Boniface and Schick unavailable, Tella has a golden opportunity to lead the line for Die Werkself this weekend in the Bundesliga.
Alonso’s weighs attacking options ahead of St Pauli clash
Tella’s heroics against Bayern Munich have given Alonso confidence, but the Spaniard remains cautious as he juggles his attacking options.
Alonso has hinted at multiple possibilities for his attacking setup, saying, “We’ve got several options for who starts up front tomorrow.
“That could be Nathan [Tella], Florian [Wirtz], Martin [Terrier]. We’ll see. Players being out is annoying, but it always presents new chances and opportunities. We’ll accept the situation and have a solution.”
While Tella is a strong candidate to start, Florian Wirtz could reprise his false nine role from the Bayern game. Youngster Artem Stepanov, who has been lighting up Leverkusen’s U19 squad, offers another alternative.
